Finding the perfect moisturizer for oily skin can be tough. Many products promise hydration but end up leaving your skin feeling greasy or clogged. And oftentimes, they add to the shine that you’re already trying to keep at bay. In this post, I’ll be going over the 5 best moisturizers for oily skin that provide the hydration you need without the unwanted weight and shine.
These are all moisturizers that I’ve personally tried and loved (read: I used up the whole container, and have rebought). From lightweight gels to oil-free lotions, these moisturizers help balance your skin’s moisture levels while keeping excess oil and shine at bay (and they’re affordable!). Let’s dive in 🧴
Best Moisturizers for Oily Skin
Gel-like moisturizer that provides your skin with intense hydration and nourishment. It contains red bean, which is a natural ingredient that helps absorb sebum, refine pores, and improve skin elasticity, and three peptides for improved skin barrier health and anti-aging properties.
Pros: Super lightweight and hydrating, great for sebum control and balancing the skin (and is slightly mattifying), absorbs easily without any residue, oil-free (non-greasy), cruelty-free, fragrance-Free
Cons: Can apply a bit sticky (which disappears); depending on how dehydrated your skin is, this may not be heavy enough for you because it is so lightweight.
Thin, lightweight gel-cream that contains 5 types of HA for refreshing hydration and soothing irritated skin, without leaving you oily or greasy. Because it contains LMW-HA, it absorbs quickly (and feels like a cold drink of water for your skin, similar to the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel). It also contains allantoin and panthenol for added soothing and hydration.
Pros: lightweight and hydrating, absorbs quickly and is non-sticky, free of added oils, leaves a dewy glow, fragrance-free, cruelty-free
Cons: Because it’s so light, I would recommend more for summer months when your skin may not need as much moisture.
This one’s thicker than the others, but it absorbs so quickly into your skin and doesn’t leave any heavy feeling. Key ingredients include hyaluronic acid that helps hydrate and moisturize, niacinamide that minimizes pores and evens out skin tone, squalane to improve balance, panthenol to soothe and further hydrate your skin, and peptides for barrier support.
Pros: thicker texture for increased moisturization and plump skin, great for balancing skin and managing pores, non-greasy, fragrance-free, cruelty-free
Cons: not as lightweight as the others (if that’s what you prefer)
This bouncy gel-cream does ALL the things for oily skin. On top of being moisturizing, niacinamide manages oil production and pores, Zinc PCA helps mattify the skin and regulate sebum, green tea extract balances and soothes the skin, and pine bark extract works with the niacinamide to even out skin texture and tone.
Pros: lightweight, great oil control, mattifying, chock-full with super ingredients for overall skin health, fragrance-free, non-greasy, cruelty-free, non-comedogenic
Cons: the texture can be a bit “glue-y” (I’ve had mixed results depending on the batch), can be too mattifying if you prefer a dewy glow look
Water-burst cream that only requires a tiny amount to provide hydration to your skin. It contains a combo of japanese botanicals and nutrients that help with minimizing oil production, balancing and refining the skin, and supporting overall skin health.
Pros: very thin and lightweight, really helps balance the skin, silky application, hydrating, oil-free, cruelty-free
Cons: pricier than the others (especially for the size), has a slight scent
