Calming Ingredients to Look For

If you have inflamed skin, choosing a skincare product with the right ingredients can make a significant difference in healing your skin. Below are some calming ones to look out for.

Note: All of these ingredients help to reduce redness and inflammation in their own way (so sorry for the repetitiveness in their descriptions), but some have additional benefits, and it’s a matter of finding out which ingredients are right for YOUR skin.

1. Centella Asiatica (Cica): This is one of my favorite ingredients for calming the redness in my skin. Renowned for its healing properties, Centella Asiatica helps reduce inflammation, promotes skin repair, and strengthens the skin barrier.

2. Niacinamide (Vitamin B3): Helps to calm inflammation, reduce redness, and improve skin barrier function. It also brightens skin, has anti-aging benefits, and enhances overall skin tone.

3. Green Tea Extract: Rich in antioxidants and polyphenols, it helps to reduce inflammation and protect the skin from oxidative stress.

4. Licorice Extract: Known for its anti-inflammatory and skin-brightening properties, licorice extract helps to reduce redness and even out skin tone.

5. Azulene: This oil possesses antibacterial properties, and reduces redness and inflammation, all the while moisturizing and enhancing skin barrier function.

6. Chamomile Extract: Chamomile is known for its anti-inflammatory and soothing properties and is ideal for sensitive skin.

7. Allantoin: In addition to its soothing and healing properties, allantoin also helps promote cell regeneration.

8. Panthenol (Vitamin B5): Provides hydration and has anti-inflammatory properties that help to soothe and heal irritated skin.

9. Beta-Glucan: Helps to soothe irritation and support the skin’s healing process, while also providing hydration.

Product Recommendations

I love me a good ampoule because they’re extremely potent and are quick to show their effects. Below are 5 that I’ve bought and rebought multiple times!

This ampoule is chock full of goodness, containing concentrated capsules of peptides, Azulene, and ceramides, as well as Centella Asiatica - all of which calm sensitive skin and help to strengthen the skin's moisture barrier.

It has a smooth, gel-like texture and comes in a pump bottle that was super convenient to use. (Also, the baby blue color is super pretty 💙)

Snail mucin has long been acclaimed for its moisturizing and skin repairing properties. This ampoule does just that, and in the process of healing the skin, calms and evens out its tone. In addition to the snail mucin, this ampoule also boasts great ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, panthenol, and antioxidant fruit extracts that improve overall skin health.

The consistency is a bit thick from the rich snail secretion, but I feel like it adds to the feeling of getting a nutrient-dense skin treatment ;)

I got this at a time when my skin was in a particularly rough state. It was gentle enough for my skin, and I saw its calming effects right away (which makes sense because it contains 73% licorice extract!)

I’ll note that the consistency was not what I’d typically expect from an ampoule - it was pretty watery. But it did feel super lightweight and absorb easily.

This is another watery ampoule that applies more like a toner. That being said, its thin consistency allows its star calming ingredient, Centella Asiatica Extract, to penetrate deeply into the skin for optimal effect.

In addition to helping get rid of the redness on my face, it was very hydrating, and was light enough that I ended up doing two rounds of application as part of my skincare routine.

So… this one is technically a serum. But it’s too good not to mention!
Containing green tea, panthenol, and mugwort (known for its antimicrobial, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties), this serum gently, but very effectively, calms and revitalizes the skin.

It has a thick-ish texture, and can sometimes feel a bit sticky upon application. But that quickly goes away and it gets fully absorbed into the skin.

(IMHO, you can’t really go wrong with anything from this brand!)
