As we enjoy the summer sun, protecting our skin from harmful UV rays is more important than ever. However, sunscreen isn’t just a beach essential; it’s a crucial part of your daily skincare routine, regardless of the season. With so many options available, choosing the right sunscreen can be overwhelming, especially if you have sensitive skin. That's why I’ve done the heavy lifting for you!

I’ve tried many different sunscreens over the years - some that I loved, and some…that I didn’t. One thing I found was that despite how good a product looks on social media or other advertising, it may not play well with sensitive skin. For example, there have been multiple times that I’ve been super excited to try a sunscreen “for sensitive skin,” only to find that it left my skin red and inflamed. But through it all, I did find some gems, so I’m excited to share what I’ve learned.

In this blog post, I’ll be diving into:

What to Look Out For In a Sunscreen

If you have sensitive skin, choosing the right face sunscreen requires extra care to avoid irritation and ensure effective protection. One good rule of thumb is to do a patch test on a small area of your skin to check for any adverse reactions before applying it all over your face. But in general, here are some characteristics to think about:

1. Mineral Ingredients (specifically Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide): These physical (mineral) sunscreens are generally gentler on sensitive skin compared to chemical sunscreens. They sit on the skin’s surface and physically block UV rays.

2. Fragrance-Free Formulas: It helps to avoid sunscreens with added fragrances, as these can irritate sensitive skin. Opt for products labeled “fragrance-free” or “unscented.”

3. Hypoallergenic: Look for sunscreens labeled as hypoallergenic, which are formulated to minimize the risk of allergic reactions.

4. Free from Harsh Additives: Avoid products with alcohol, parabens, or other potentially irritating ingredients. Check the ingredient list for common irritants and allergens.

5. Gentle Formulas: Look for products that are formulated with soothing ingredients like aloe vera or chamomile. These are often formulated with sensitive skin in mind.

6. Non-Comedogenic: If you are prone to acne, select a sunscreen that is non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog pores or exacerbate acne.

7. Moisturizing Ingredients: Look for sunscreens with hydrating ingredients like glycerin or hyaluronic acid, which can help soothe and maintain moisture in sensitive skin.

By keeping these factors in mind, you can find a face sunscreen that protects your skin from UV damage while minimizing the risk of irritation.

Sunscreen Product Recommendations

These sunscreens are all ones that I’ve bought multiple times because of how much I enjoyed using them. I hope they can work well for you too 😊

I’m a bit embarassed to mention how many tubes of this sunscreen I’ve gone through since discovering it...it’s SO good.

It is SPF40 and offers both UVA and UVB protection. The consistency is a super thin cream, such that it quickly gets absorbed by the skin, all the while providing a good amount of hydration. It’s fragrance-free and contains soothing ingredients, such as rice extract and grain-derived probiotics. After application, it looks and feels like you’re not wearing anything.

This suncreen mostly stood out to me because of its consistency. It is a bit more runny than the others listed (as the name implies), so it absorbed into the skin easily and felt very lightweight. It also contains Centella Asiatica and Rosemary Leaf Extract, which are great for calming the skin.

It uses both chemical and physical shields, so the finish is not as matte as the other sunscreens listed…instead you’re left with a glowy look. However, it didn’t cause any skin irritation and left hardly any whitecast, all the while providing good sun protection (SPF 50+ PA++++).

This SPF 30 sunscreen is made with a super light zinc oxide formula that physically blocks UVA/UVB rays, while still being lightweight. It has a gel cream texture that easily applies on the skin, boasts a mixture of antioxidant superfood botanicals, and is also non-irritating and non-comedogenic.

I will note that you have to rub it in quite thoroughly, or else it can leave a cast on the face. However, I actually enjoyed the light/mint green tint because coupled with the semi-matte finish, it acted as a good primer.

This mineral suncreen offers SPF 50+ PA++++ protection, and contains Goami rice extracts that help nourish and soothe the skin. These ingredientss are also said to help with gentle cell turnover, without irritation.

It has a light gel cream consistency. And though it does require a thorough application to get rid of the whitecast, the finish is smooth and non-greasy.

This sunscreen is a staple in my arsenal. On top of providing SPF 50 PA++++ protection, it contains Niacinamide and Hyaluronic Acid, ingredients that help with brightening the skin and retaining moisture.

It is non-irritating, applies very smoothly, and leaves the skin looking and feeling dewy (not greasy). Similar to the Beauty of Joseon sunscreen, the consistency is similar to a thin cream, so it doesn’t feel heavy on the face, and it doesn’t leave any whitecast.
